Originally built by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, this renovated 22,000-square-foot villa and adjacent 15,000-square-foot guest house has been reincarnated as an eco-chic resort specializing in rustic luxury: spacious, bohemian-styled rooms; ocean breezes instead of air conditioning; electricity from dusk to midnight only; and fresh, simply prepared food.

The new Six Day Cleanse Retreat includes morning beach walks, daily yoga classes, fitness training, excursions to nearby freshwater swimming holes and Mayan ruins, and a menu of local produce, fresh fish, and organic chicken.

Worried about lingering bad karma left over from Escobar's occupancy? Fear not, the resort was spiritually cleansed and blessed by Tibetan monk Palden Gyatso, post-renovation, in 2005.
