Carnival, that last fling before Lent, kicks off with one of the best celebrations in Italy—Carnival in Venice (Jan 25-Feb 5).
The carnival in Venice has been around since 1268, and the biggest days are the second Thursday, known as Giovedi Grasso, or “Fat Thursday,” and the last day, Martedi Grasso, or “Shrove Tuesday.”
Most events are held around the Piazza San Marco, which fills up with thousands of people dressed in flashy costumes on the first Sunday. But don’t stay put for too long—some of the most interesting events, such as Baroque music and Commedia dell’Arte, are held on the smaller squares.
Our top pick to sleep in Venice, the Palazzo Barbarigo sul Canal Grande, a renovated 16th century palazzo on the Grand Canal.
