OFF SEASON GREECE

Off season, Greece is spectacular. One of our favorite destinations, Hydra – the island where the wealthy, arty and influential have their summer homes.

Of the arguably 6,000 Greek islands and islets, Hydra is the one which springs to mind as the “cultured” and cosmopolitan island. Whether the refuge from pirates in long gone times, or the setting for Onassis’ guests or Hollywood movies, Hydra keeps its profile high.

When to visit: Easter, May & June, and September & October. Avoid July & August unless you’re on a yacht moored in a deserted cove.

How to get there: The only way to reach the island is by sea. There are daily ferries from Pireas in Athens.

Transportation on the island: Once you reach Hydra, be prepared to walk. The only means of transportation is the mule (yes indeed, Onassis did use a helicopter pad here but that was a long time ago)! There are also efficient water taxis, should you decide to go to a nearby beach or island.

Sleep: Try the Guest House Nereids, Phaedra Hotel or the Greco Hotel.

Eat & drink: A good selection of tavernas, bars, and restaurants are spread on the seashore. Definitely try local specialties such as kolohtipa (local lobster), best served with spaghetti and washed down with a local white wine; marinated caper leaves and kritamo, the famous sea salad. Sunset Restaurant on the waterfront and Enalion on Vlichos Beach are not to be missed.

So, put on your shades, order a fredoccino and savor the world passing by under the thick shade of your umbrella. Need we say more?
