Before the weather starts to break, hit the road for Vermont. With its ski resorts, historic architecture, and treasure trove of antique shops, the Green Mountains are a winter wonderland well worth a road trip.
Far from the maddening crowd, this winter excursion will bring you face-to-face with some of the oldest covered bridges and postcard-worthy barns in the country, not to mention down-home country stores, picturesque towns, and plenty of fresh air and nature.
What to Do:
Choose the road less traveled: The best way to explore Vermont is via the back roads, such as scenic Route 100 (for Area’s dream drive on Route 100 click here).
Hit the slopes: With nearly two dozen downhill-ski areas (Stratton, Sugarbush, Stowe) and some 30 cross-country centers, there’s something for everyone.
Dash through the snow: Take in the rolling hills in a horse-drawn sleigh. Try the rides at Thatcher Brook Inn.
Shop local: Antique stores, furniture makers, dairy farms, breweries, and maple syrup abound, so seek out Vermont’s specialties and sample the goods.
Where to Sleep:
The Lauren (3 Church St, Woodstock): A newly renovated, historic inn in the heart of classic Woodstock.
The Inn at the Round Barn Farm (1661 E Warren Rd, Waitsfield): Sleep among antiques in a 19th-century dairy farmhouse and converted horse barn.
The Pitcher Inn (275 Main St, Warren): Eleven rooms, each designed distinctively, in a picturesque village at the base of Sugarbush resort.
Twin Farms (Barnard): Vermont’s most luxurious inn and spa on three hundred acres of rolling hills.
