FIRST IMPRESSIONISTS

Enough with the cherry blossoms. When you’re done gazing at the fluffy flowers, move on to canvas and check out The Phillips Collection, one of the premiere small art museums in the world and America’s first museum of modern art.

Opened in 1921, there’s an internationally recognized permanent collection of nearly 2,500 works by American and European modern artists, but what makes this place so special is the intimate setting in which to view them. Housed in founder Duncan Phillips’ 1897 Georgian Revival abode in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, the unique “domestic” setting makes you feel right at home.

Just opened: The Great American Epic: Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series. The first ever produced narrative painting on the great 20th-century exodus of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North. The complete 60-panel series, rarely seen in its entirely, is on view through October 26.

On our radar: Diebenkorn in New Mexico | Brett Weston: Out of the Shadow, June 21–September 7.
