One of the things that impressed us most on a recent trip to Pittsburgh (or "the Burgh" as it's called by locals) is the quality of its art museums. Who knew this former steel town had so much creatively to offer?
For an art-and-about day, start at The Andy Warhol Museum, one of the most comprehensive single-artist museums in the world. Celebrating Pittsburgh's native son, The Warhol has a wide-ranging collection of the artist's paintings, photographs, sculptures, films and more, as well as exhibits by other artists.
Next head to the Mattress Factory, a contemporary art museum that presents art you can get into -room-sized environments, presented by in-residence artists. Located in the historic Mexican War Streets on Pittsburgh's North Side, it's one of a few museums of its kind anywhere.
And don't leave town without having a look at Silver Eye Center for Photography on East Carson Street on the South Side for its rotating photography exhibits showcasing regional, national and international talent. A small cultural jewel, it's gaining a national reputation.
