Eccentricity abounds at this tiny
shoemaker's shop overflowing with sandals, framed letters,
and pictures of Pantelis Melissinos' most recent theatrical debut in Athens.
Sophia Loren, the Beatles, Jackie Onassis, and the Prince
of Wales (among others) have turned the world on to
this poet shoemaker, who along with crafting the
finest handmade leather sandals, is an artist, playwright,
poet, and composer. As we had our own pair of Jackie O’s fitted,
we learned the story from Pantelis himself. The
shoe shop began with his grandfather, continued with his
father, and was given to him when he was seven.
Fast forward forty years, ten in New York at
Parson's School of Design, and Pantelis is still here.
But remember, there's no glitz here.
Just shoes. Cash only. When you walk in,
you'll get the same treatment Lily Tomlin did,
when she bought four pairs the same week we did.
