British designer William Emmerson
divides his time between his modern and vintage furniture gallery,
Emmerson Troop in Los Angeles, creating his
own furniture collections, designing commercial and residential
interiors, and shopping the world for rare,
vintage finds. Area caught up with the designer
on his return from a European shopping trip to ask his favorite places to shop.
Stockholm: Design junkies will get a serious fix
in the Swedish capital. Try
Modernity (Sibyllegatan 6) for a mix
of contemporary designers and vintage,
Asplund
(Sibyllegatan 31) for high-quality and
functional Scandanavian style, and Konsthantverket
for glassware, ceramics, textiles,
and jewelry (Södermalmstorg 4).
Antwerp: There are stores here you won’t
find anywhere else and most are within walking
distance of one another. The hip design shops are
on Kloosterstraat. Check out Den 18 (Kloosterstraat 18)
for 20th century vintage and Loft Styles (Kloosterstraat 81)
for cool industrial lights and tables. And
Ann Demeulemeester’s shop (Verlatstraat 38)
is worth a look for the store design itself
– a vast, unfinished space in an
old school that makes you feel like you’re
in an artist’s workshop. When you’re shopped out,
grab a bite at Hofstraat 24 (Hofstraat 24),
French influenced cuisine in a historic house
with a sophisticated, yet homey feel.
Just be aware that most stores are only
open Wednesday through Sunday, so plan accordingly.
