If you haven’t been to Edinburgh recently, you may think of it as a stuffy and stodgy place. Well think again. The city is buzzing with change, from Enric Miralle’s dramatically contemporary new parliament to the rejuvenated docklands of Leith.
August is the best time to go when four festivals- including the world’s largest arts festival, the Fringe- are in town.
Sleep at Tigerlilly, Edinburgh’s newest boutique hotel which has a hip cocktail bar and restaurant, or if country living is more your style, Greywalls, one of Scotland’s most distinctive period house hotels, has refurbished ‘The Kings Loo’ – a unique bedroom in the rose garden which was previously the toilette of Edward VII. It’s only 25 minutes from the center of town and the countryside is gorgeous.
Eat at The Kitchin in Leith, recently awarded a Michelin star, or Abstract on Edinburgh’s Castle Street for innovative French fare.
And don’t leave town without picking up some beautiful woolens and Scottish scones.
