STREET SMART

The beaches and the Tate Modern were great and all, but what you really treasure from your summer vacation is the one-of-a-kind score from the street market you stumbled across. Here are our favorite markets around the world to prepare you for your next shopping spree.

Buenos Aires: San Pedro Telmo Antiques Fair: The best antique stores and stalls in Argentina made even better by tango dancers and street musicians on every corner. Hundreds of booths sell everything from kitschy tourist items to pricey antiques. Buy beautiful old chandeliers and bridles from long-gone gauchos. Sundays only.

Chiang Mai, Thailand: Walking Street Market: Cheaper than the touristy Night Bazaar with better-quality goods, you know it's good if locals shop here. Pick up silk pillowcases and cotton tunics in amazing colors, then finish with a hour-long foot massage for less than your daily soy latte. Sundays only.

Marrakech: The Souks: Wander the maze of passageways and soak up the never-ending array of carpets, leather goods, jewelry, spices and colorful fabrics. Time is slower here, so take time to browse and sip a mint tea with a vendor while haggling over prices. Just be prepared for some of the world's best salesmen! And don't leave without buying Moroccan ironwork or babouche slippers and a set of Moroccon tea glasses to sip mint tea when you get back home. Open daily.
