CINEMA PARADISO

If kicking on some snow boots and hitting Sundance isn’t your thing, channel your inner Marcello Mastroianni and head to the Venice Film Festival (part of the Venice Biennale) at the end of August for a dose of first-rate film glamour. Here you’ll find movie stars, moguls and the media on Venice’s Lido (the island just off the coast of Venice) as well as world-class films screened in a historic setting. Some call it Cannes without the hassle- and the beach is better too!

The oldest film festival in the world (and one of the most prestigious) the 65th Venice International Film Festival kicks off this year on Aug 27 and runs through Sep 6 when the winners (or Golden Lions) are announced. German director Wim Wenders heads the international jury and the Coen Brothers’ latest film, Burn After Reading, opens the Festival. A complete lineup of films will be announced at www.labiennale.org/en/cinema.

While in town sleep at the 16th century Palazzo Barbarigo sul Canal Grande.
