There’s no denying it; sportswear is an essential part of the modern wardrobe. Trainers and tracksuits are more readily worn than suits, and high performance textiles developed for competitive athletes are being integrated into high fashion.
Explore the creative connections between the two worlds of fashion and sport at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum’s exhibition, Fashion V Sport (running through January 4, 2009). Displaying design drawings, photographs, film, and 60 outfits, including performance sportswear, work by fashion designers such as Stella McCartney who have designed sportswear lines, and garments such as the work of Japanese label Visvim which show the influence of sportswear on high fashion, the exhibition explores the intersection of fashion and sport. It examines the way that sports styles are adapted to make fashion statements as well as how sports and fashion products are worn, designed, advertised and collected.
Don’t miss the section on “extreme” products where you can witness firsthand Nike's handmade crocodile skin trainers and Ends' diamond-encrusted shoelaces.
