Looking for a far flung destination? Try Lijiang – in China’s southwest Yunnan Province – China’s next “It” destination. Often called the Venice of the Orient because of its many bridges and canals, this ancient capital of the Naxi kingdom was once an important stop on the Silk Road to Tibet. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Come with your walking shoes to explore this time-warp town. Instead of traffic lights and skyscrapers, you’ll see ancient temples and Naxi women cleaning vegetables and washing clothes alongside the canals. Market Square is located in the center of the old town. Many wood and stone Naxi houses embellished with intricate carvings and elaborate courtyards have been converted into shops and restaurants, where you’ll find traditional arts & crafts and authentic cuisine. If you’re in the mood for entertainment, go to the Concert Hall to watch the Naxi orchestra perform classical Taoist music; or grab your dancing shoes and join the Naxi residents for vivacious folk dancing under the red lanterns.
In search of architectural splendor? Don’t miss the Mu Mansion, a cultural and historical monument that locals tout as bearing a close resemblance to Beijing's Forbidden City albeit on a smaller scale. And when dusk beckons, take a walk up Lion Hill for a magnificent view of the old town.
Just outside the city is the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a sacred sanctuary to locals. We recommend recharging your spirit on the famed Tiger Leaping Gorge trek or visiting the Mosuo People beside Lugu Lake to see the last “Kingdom of Women” on earth.
How to get there: There are direct flights from Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Chengdu to Lijiang Airport.
Sleep: If you’re feeling flush, Banyan Tree has a new resort in Lijiang.
