TROPICAL PUNCH

With the economy as it is, we’re all looking for places to live it up, without breaking the bank. Front and center on our bargain radar - Little Corn Island, Nicaragua.

Tiny, remote, and unspoiled, this heavenly slice of Central America (50 miles off the coast of Nicaragua) is much less costly than nearby Costa Rica or Belize. Nicaragua's islands share the same remarkable barrier reef as Belize, but without the crowds and inflated prices (a single dive costs $38 and a post-dive Victoria Beer will set you back $3).

Sleep: Rent a bungalow on the beach at Casa Iguana whose web site boasts, "No cars, no phones, no cocktail umbrellas, no jet skis, no movie stars, no worries” for $35/night.

Play: There’s never a dull moment in Little Corn. The sport fishing is extraordinary -- kingfish, dolphin, jack, snapper and barracuda abound less than a mile offshore. Fly fishermen land tarpon and bonefish right from the beach. For those who prefer the view from under the surface, Dive Little Corn takes three trips a day, plus a night dive for nocturnal types. If you don’t have your certification, instruction for all levels is available. And if diving isn’t your thing, there’s snorkeling, kayaking, kiteboarding and windsurfing.
