Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Hit the last few days of Prospect.1, New Orleans' first biennial and the biggest contemporary art show ever held in America, before it closes on January 18. Similar in scope to Venice, the exhibit brings together installations and work by 81 international artists in over 20 locations spanning the city (from the New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park to the Lower Ninth Ward’s multiple installation locations).
The goal of Prospect.1 is to reinvigorate the city by creating “an entirely new category of tourism for the city” based on the growing interest in modern art. Commenting on the organizer’s boldness, Peter Schjeldahl writes in the New Yorker, "featuring few big names and nary a masterpiece, it is my favorite biennial since the nineteen-eighties."
And remember that every night you stay in a hotel, every meal you eat, and every musician you hear performing in a local club, contributes directly to the rebuilding of New Orleans.
