From the gravity defying Tiger’s Nest monastery to the temple of the Divine Madman, take a journey high into the Himalayas into the ethereal world that is the Kingdom of Bhutan. A good time of year to go - during the annual Punakha Festival, taking place this year on March 1-8, dedicated to Yeshe Gompo and Palden Lhamo, the two main protective deities of the local Buddhist lineage, the Drukpa Kagyu.
The main event, or Serda, is a re-enactment of a 17th century war episode involving Tibet. Afterwards, monks and laymen perform masked dances, dressed in bright costumes of rich brocade and yellow silk, ornamented with carved bones.
Uma Paro offers a 10-day package (Feb 28 – March 10) to coincide with the festival that includes two days of immersion in festival activities.
