Wanted: undiscovered Central American culture with laid back, tropical flair.
Found: Placencia, Belize.
The stretch of white sandy beach off the world’s second largest barrier reef and the colorful mix of Creole, Garifuna, Mayan, Latin, Chinese and Western cultures makes this charming fishing village a truly special place. The vibe isn’t chic; it’s laid back (though not hippie annoying).
Sleep: For posh digs, stay at the Turtle Inn, Francis Ford Coppola’s Balinese haven, or The Inn at Robert’s Grove, for Caribbean casual. Or for a more low key experience, rent a bungalow on the beach.
Eat: The peninsula’s best food can be found at French Connection, tucked away in a narrow alleyway a mere stones throw from the beach. The cuisine is modern European in a casual setting. Head to Rum Fish for tapas and wine; and Saffron for modern Indian food on a deserted stretch of beach. For lunch, no need to change out of the bikini, DeTach serves up tasty fish burritos under thatched huts on the beach. While in town, pick up souvenirs like Guatemalan bags, hammocks, handmade jewelry, and Belizean rum.
Outdoor Thrills: Go snorkeling on the reef. Nite Wind Tours in Placencia Village will organize the trip. Trek into the rainforest to Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit Mayan sites; or head to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s only jaguar preserve and a superb place for birding, hiking and wildlife viewing. Take a picnic lunch and cool off under a waterfall. Lazy? Plant your bikini-clad ass on the beach and soak up endless supplies of vitamin D.
Now Go Already: Fly to Belize City, then take Maya Island Air to Placencia. Here’s the nonstop cheat sheet: Continental from Houston, American from Miami or Dallas; Delta from Atlanta.
