IN BLOOM

DC is just beginning to thaw out and its’ Cherry Blossom Festival (March 28 – April 12) is right around the corner! The breathtaking scene around the Tidal Basin is rumored to make even cold-blooded lobbyists crack a smile.

Sleep: For upscale luxury, book the Cherry Blossom Package at The Hay-Adams which is as close as you can get to staying at the White House, short of being invited by the President (Obama and family stayed here in Jan); or try the Park Hyatt Washington’s annual Spring Blossom Package which gives you a room upgrade, a pot of Cherry Blossom Green Tea from the hotel’s Tea Cellar, and choice of valet parking or breakfast. Want something livelier? Celebrate the blooms at the Palomar. Their Cherry Blossom Festival Package gives you a $40 restaurant voucher, two-day metro passes and a fun welcome amenity.

View: Best place to view the blossoms? The Tidal Basin or Bethesda’s Kenwood neighborhood.

Eat: As beautiful as the blossoms are, you can’t eat ’em. Best off hitting Hello Cupcake for a cherry blossom treat. The Dupont Circle shop offers Meyer lemon cupcakes with a filling of French cherry preserves, white chocolate frosting and a hand-made sugar cherry blossom on top.

Shop: Before heading out of town, pick up some blooms of your own. Ultra Violet sources white and pink blossoms from local farms and pairs them with peonies, lilacs, and hydrangeas.
