Robert DeNiro co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2001 to revitalize lower Manhattan after the World Trade Center attacks. It’s since grown to screen over 200 films, including many world premieres. This year’s festival takes place April 22 - May 3.
Who goes: A melting pot of indie filmmakers and LA-types.
Getting in: The easiest way to access the festival is by purchasing a Franklin Pass. For $425, you get 20 general screening tickets and early ticket selection (starts April 6). If you’re in the biz, the $500 Hudson Industry Pass secures access to all regular and premium screenings, panel discussions and events (excluding gala screenings). And for star treatment, the Exclusive Access Package gives you VIP access, including reserved seats at gala premieres. Have an American Express card? Cardmembers can purchase ticket packages and individual tickets a week before the general public.
If Tribeca is too commercial for you, join Area at the Southeast New England (SENE) Film, Music & Arts Festival in Providence, Rhode Island this weekend (April 2-5) for some indie flicks. A short road trip from New York and Boston, this debut festival will feature over 60 feature and short films including some World, US and New England premieres.
Highlighted at this year's festival is America’s Lost Band, a film that documents The Remains who toured with the Beatles and appeared on Ed Sullivan before breaking up. The Remains will reunite to perform live after the film.
