Looking for a hot new destination? Make like a Brazilian celeb and head to the islands of Angra dos Reis, which are best reached by helicopter or yacht (Not at your disposal? Catch the ferry). It’s a favorite of the São Paulo elite, who of course have both.
Angra dos Reis means "Bay of Kings" because it was first reached on January 6, 1502 when Catholics celebrate Epiphany, the Day of the Three Kings. And trust us, this place does justice to its kingly name - even the most jaded royal would fall under the spell of Angra.
What makes the area so special? Emerald green waters, white sandy beaches, and plenty of nature. The largest of the 365 islands, Ilha Grande, is a superb spot for diving and hiking. Gipóia, the second largest island, has terrific beaches as well as top-notch snorkeling spots.
Compared with the gorgeous beaches, the town of Angra is disappointing (read supertankers dock in Angra’s port and nuclear reactors mar the skyline). We suggest skipping Angra completely and hopping the first ferry for Ilha Grande and Estrela da Ilha, an eco-lodge with a beautiful view, secluded beach and modern amenities.
The staff will help you rent a boat to visit the beaches. If you like bustle, head for Jurubaíba Beach or Praia do Dentista, where floating bars serve fresh seafood to boaters. Juruba Beach is more peaceful and secluded and can only be reached by canoe. Sururu Beach is almost deserted, with strong waves that crash against the reefs and Oeste Beach is wilder, with warmer water.
The diving in the region is also world-renowned. Try the wreck of the Panamanian freighter Pinguino, which sank off Sitio Forte Island in 1967.
Traveling alone stinks! Besides, bragging is more fun with accomplices to goad you on. Send this e-mail to people you love to travel with.
