A city that’s getting kudos for its green initiatives is Copenhagen, the colorful Danish capital. Selected by the International Cycling Union as the first “Bike City” in the world, Copenhagen is a two-wheel town for visitors and residents alike (more than 36% cycle to work or school daily, the highest in the world). Travelers can rent one of 2,000 free token bikes at designated bike stations throughout the city, from April to November. Bikes can also be rented directly from many of the city’s boutique hotels, and guided bike safaris are available. Cycling events will be held throughout 2009, including the World Cup and European Championships.
On top of the eco-friendly transportation options, in conjunction with the United Nations Climate Change Conference (Dec 7-18), Copenhagen is offering a broad range of public events themed around sustainability, climate, environment and ecology throughout 2009.
And CO2PENHAGEN 2009 is Denmark’s most innovative showcase of experiences and green technology, and is the first time that a music and art festival runs entirely on renewable energy (Sep 4-6). The event takes place at Denmark’s Technical University located just outside of Copenhagen.
