Thrill seeker? Music junkie? Cape Town offers it all and more. Here are some of our favorite activities to satisfy whatever moves you.
Mingle and drink beer: For a quintessentially local weekend experience in Cape Town, head down to The Old Biscuit Mill in the Woodstock area. This neighborhood market comes alive every Saturday from 9am-2pm with residents eating, shopping and drinking their way through the many stalls of organic produce, hand-made breads, cheeses and other freshly prepared specialty foods. The vibe is energetic and a good time is had by all.
Jump off a cliff, literally! Take advantage of Cape Town's magnificent landscape from the air. Cape Town Tandem Paragliding will guide you through the open skies with an exhilarating ride off one of the many peaks surrounding the city.
Get your groove on: Sit down to dinner or enjoy a cup of coffee while listening to cool jazz and blues at the newest hot spot in town, The Best Ugly. Located in the emerging area of Green Point, the ground floor offers a cool ambiance with live performances while the upstairs fireplace lounge is perfect for enjoying a single malt whiskey or glass of wine.
Shop 'til you drop! Check out the many emerging local designers in Cape Town. Take a drive out to the suburb of Constantia and browse through Maya Prass' boutique filled with colorful print pants, shirts, bags and elegant dresses. Need something a bit funkier? Stop by Darkie on Long Street and pick up a Nelson Mandela T-shirt or other African-inspired gear designed by Darkie himself who will greet you with a warm, friendly smile.
Educate yourself: While the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is informative, the District Six Museum in Cape Town is a more personal account of one specific area. Established in December 1994, it focuses on residents' memories of forced removals. It's a small, personal museum and should not be missed.
