THE LITTLE ISLAND THAT COULD

Nevis may not be on your radar, but once you have visited this little island you'll wonder what took you so long to discover this tropical paradise. Filled with history and culture, the island is an easy ferry ride from its sister island, St. Kitts.

Plantation inns are a great option here and while there are many to choose from, the only one situated directly on the water is the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club. Sitting on 30-acres of an old sugar plantation, the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club caters to a crowd looking for barefoot elegance, perfect for honeymooning couples and love birds interested in hosting a destination wedding. Or try the Montpelier Plantation Inn in the hills a few miles from the coast. This former overgrown sugar plantation is now a stylish inn that's a bit more contemporary than the West Indies norm.

If you are going to visit one beach bar while there, Sunshine's is the place to go. Located on Pinney Beach, Llewellyn Caines, aka Sunshine, takes great pride in his secret ingredient rum punch known as the "killer bee." He also serves some of the island's best lobster and conch.

And as for the history lesson, Nevis was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. Who knew?!
