HAWAIIAN PUNCH

We all know the scene... Tourists wearing leis gathered around a mock luau at a large resort while locals play the ukelele trying to give an authentic feel to the "experience." While that is fine for some, I preferred to see Hawaii up close and personal. That's why on my last visit to the islands I opted for a hiking excursion to bond with its natural beauty.

After finding a hiking group on Gorp.com, I was excited by the prospect of trekking my way through the islands. For three weeks my group and I hiked along Kaui's Na Pali Coast, witnessed the glowing color of the active Kilauea volcano on the Big Island, and ventured three miles down into the massive non-active volcano of Haleakala on Maui.

It was this volcano, although dormant, that packed the most powerful punch, as its topography was more stunning than any I had seen (and have yet to see). There were not many people heading down into the "belly of the beast." Most choose to observe the volcano from the air via helicopter. Except for the occasional silversword flower (only found in Haleakala National Park) and cinder cones resembling the moon's craters, its barren landscape and tranquil setting was quite a unique experience.

I highly suggest a hike down into Haleakala if you plan on visiting Maui. And for a completely authentic stay while on Maui, try the "Upcountry" region of the island and check out the Silver Cloud Ranch.

Aloha,
Lisa
