While traveling in Lima, Peru, I had the opportunity to visit a truly original "museum."
Actually, it's not a museum at all, but the private home of Enrico Poli. A native of Italy, Poli, who could easily be called an eccentric genius, moved to Peru in 1950 and spent six years living in the Andes where he discovered his passion and love for all things Incan.
A labor of love, he began collecting pre-Colombian artifacts as a tribute to the people who shaped this unique civilization and preserving the artifacts in his home. The collection grew, and is now one of the finest in all of Peru, with pieces ranging from 2000 BC to the early 1800s. Over the course of two hours, Poli will personally guide you through his collection of pottery, furnishings, sculptures, altars, and creepy mummified heads of Incan royalty... all the while philosophizing on life, love and religion.
Next time you're in Lima, be sure to check out Museo Enrico Poli, an experience that National Geographic ranks as one of the world's "greatest adventures." Tours are given by appointment only. To arrange a tour, click here.
