Take a cue from Paul Revere this spring: Ride outta town screaming about freedom. Traditionally, from late March through mid-May, New England transforms from a vast snow blanket into a muddy playground, affectionately known as mud season to the locals. But this time of year is also considered maple season, or sugaring time. Here are our favorite ways to celebrate springtime in New England.
Head to the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine for their Mud Package which includes two nights accommodations, Peppermint Maine Mud, two mudslide cocktails by the fireplace and two pairs of L.L. Bean signature boots for walking in the mud. Good now through April 30.
Or try the Woodstock Inn & Resort's Sugar Season Escape. The hint of maple in the air from sap boiling in sugar shacks makes springtime in Vermont one of the sweetest times of year and with skiers departed and summer tourists yet to arrive, you can explore Woodstock's charming streets and eclectic boutiques, galleries, and cafés without the crowds. Runs through May 11.
Had enough of the mud mess? Early-April to mid-May is a great time to stop and smell the daffodils. Hop a ferry to Nantucket where over three million daffodils will bloom, kicking off the Daffodil Festival Weekend, April 23-25. When you're not viewing the blooms, bike the empty roads and find your way to Bartlett's Farm, belly up to the bar at Straight Wharf Restaurant and nibble on smoked bluefish paté, and sleep at eco-friendly Hotel Green.
If you can't make the daffodils, the Nantucket Wine Festival takes over the island, May 20-24, bringing top vintners and restaurateurs to the island for a week-long celebration of wine and food. Splurge with the Aficionado Package at the White Elephant or The Wauwinet which offers three nights accommodations, two tickets to the Festival's gala kick-off, a cooking demonstration, and admission for two to the Grand Tasting at the Nantucket Yacht Club.
And if you want to enjoy the island without the crowds, book the Quiet Season Getaway at The Veranda House. You'll have the deserted beach, narrow streets, and local restaurants all to yourself. Package includes accommodations for two nights, daily breakfast, afternoon tea and cookies, and ferry transportation for two to/from Nantucket. Good from May 24 - June 17 and August 29 - October 30.
