NO SPAIN, NO GAIN

Cobblestone streets, sweet sangria, melt-in-your-mouth tapas, and long stretches of white, sandy beaches make Alicante, Spain a destination worth visiting. Area informant Melissa Melcombe gives us the rundown.

Shopping Spree: Stroll along the embarcadero where vendors sell their wares for bargain prices. You will find everything from savvy scarves and leather wallets to skinny belts and colorful souvenirs.

Just Dance: Early birds take a hike-the party in Alicante doesn't get started until after midnight. R & B, house, and pop music will keep you dancing all night long at SWING nightclub. Dancing begins at 2:15 am and goes till dawn.

Time to Eat: For a casual tapas experience, check out Lizarran Taberna along the Rambla where you can handpick your favorite selections from the counter. We love the spinach empanadas and smoked salmon canapés. For a posh tapas experience and signature Spanish Paella, head to the chic Senzone Tapas Bar. Sip on Spanish wine while you wait for your paella (about 30 minutes) and sink your teeth into fried halloumi cheese and salty padron peppers.

Soak Up the Culture: No visit to Alicante is complete without a hike up to the Santa Barbara Castle. Picturesque views of Alicante, the beaches and the port make this hike one-of-a-kind. Museum fans must venture to the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ), a former winner of the European Museum of the Year Award.

Sweet Dreams: Close proximity to the beach, a beautiful rooftop pool, and fantastic amenities (did someone say vanilla cinnamon body wash?) make Hospes Amerigo the place to stay in Alicante.
