Suitable for a balmy beach excursion or a deep dive into the reputed heart of Italy, Sicily is a dynamic island of sandy beaches, fishing villages and rugged rural seclusion. Today, Area descends to share choice ways to play.
From art and culture to fun-packed activities; we've even found the most inspiring places to enjoy the views! Playtime is easy in Sicily.
Viewpoint
Erice, a fairytale village perched on a cliff above Trapani, is one of the island's most beautiful vantage points. It's a magnet for tourists, but still a lovely spot for lunch with a view.
Arts and culture
Seek out the baroque chapels and the impressive Teatro Massimo in Palermo.
Something for nothing
Visit the mafia stronghold of Corleone in the island's mountainous interior, and take a walk along the twisting roads above town. Bernardo Provenzano, the recently captured boss of bosses, hid out around here for more than 40 years, as did several other high-ranking mafiosi. You'll certainly feel a long way from Palermo.
Shopping
Browse the colourful Balleṛ market in Palermo, or pick up cheap-chic Italian labels along the city's Via Sant' Agostino.
Daytripper
Take a hydrofoil out to the picturesque Egadi island of Favignana, off Sicily's west coast. The less intrepid will find themselves super content relaxing on the beach in one of the clear-watered coves around Gulfo di Castellamare.
Perfect picnic
If you fancy a quick traditional Palermitan bite, panelle are tasty fried square-shaped snacks made from chickpea flour. A perfect spot to pick up these is Antica Focacceria just off Piazza San Francisco. To satisfy a sweet tooth while you're on the hoof, try the unique native gelati - pistachio ice-cream served in a brioche is as authentic - and indulgent - as it gets.
Walks
The capital, Palermo, is unlike any other city in Europe. Wander its spaghetti-like warren of medieval alleys, and soak up an exciting mix of cultures and sights. Gaze at crumbling 15th-century palaces, then pause for a cappuccino, or perhaps a Peroni or three, in a pretty piazza. If you wonder why the streets are suddenly packed around 7pm, that's because it's passeggiata time, when everyone goes for their pre-dinner meet-and-greet stroll.
Activities
A good way to get a feel for the island is to drive from Taormina, a chi-chi east coast resort in the shadow of Mount Etna, to Palermo in the northwest, using only coastal roads. The journey takes you past the 'toe' of Italy, clearly visible across the Straits of Messina, and within touching distance of the beautiful Aeolian islands, where the volcano Stromboli rumbles threateningly. Stop in the charming north coast fishing village of Cefalu, and eat gelati amid its ancient Moorish architecture.
