GREEN MOUNTAIN GETAWAY

Looking for a simple summer getaway into crisp air and nature? The Green Mountains of Vermont may be smaller than the Alps, but they offer big scenery, stunning beauty and New England charm.

Here are our picks for a weekend getaway to northern Vermont:

Day One: In a fertile valley between Mt. Mansfield and other peaks of the Green Mountains to the west and Hogback Mountains to the east, lies Stowe, a classic New England town. In summer, Stowe is known for breathtaking views, lush scenery, cool mountain air and an array of outdoor festivals and activities.

Sleep: The town is flush with family-owned Bed & Breakfast spots that offer the quintessential New England experience (that we love), or for a higher level of luxury, check out the Stowe Mountain Lodge, a brand-new mountain lodge in the heart of Stowe. This summer, they are celebrating two years by offering a 2nd Anniversary Package which includes over $300 in added value. Just hurry, reservations must be made by Friday, July 30.
Eat: Check out the new lodge over a pint of organic pale ale at The Great Room Bar & Grill, then trudge over to Solstice for a locally focused meal sourced from Vermont farms. Or head down the hill for a fresh-brewed pint at The Alchemist in Waterbury followed by a bite from the ever-changing, local menu at Hen of the Wood.
Play: Explore the old village and hike and bike on the many trails.

Day Two: Head west to Lake Champlain to kayak or sail on the lake.

Sleep: The Inn at Shelburne Farms is an eco-friendly historic inn nestled on 400-acres of sustainable woodlands.
Eat: Don't miss dinner at Starry Night Café in Ferrisburg.
Play: The best way to see the lake is to paddle it. True North Kayak Tours will rent you a kayak. Or ride a bike around the lake's perimeter or hike the Green Mountains or the Adirondacks.
