WINTER THAW

Who’s sick of the cold? Instead of chapped cheeks and frostbite, recharge your batteries in the Mexican sun. One of our favorite spots for a winter getaway? Tulum, the low-key beach town on the Yucatán Peninsula, where the water is turquoise and the power grid stops at the main highway.

Fly into Cancun airport, rent a jeep, and drive the 2-hour trip to Tulum.

Sleep: Book a jungle suite at Be Tulum, an eco-chic hideaway with a gorgeous beach, or rent a rustic bungalow on the beach at Zamas. Prefer more activity? Sign up for a yoga retreat at Amansala.

Eat: Head to Hartwood on the jungle side for deliciously fresh fare prepared on the grill or in the wood-burning oven, Hechizo for a rotating menu of seasonal dishes, or dig into a bowl of homemade pasta at Posada Margherita.

Play: When you're not lying on the beach get out and discover. Head to the Mayan ruins at Coba, a large Pre-Columbian city known for it's pyramid that unlike Chichen Itza's Kukulkan Pyramid is still open for the public to climb its 120 steps to the top of the site. Or rent a bike and some snorkel gear, grab a map, and head out to explore the cenotes (freshwater sinkholes). Cenotes are unique to the Yucatan, and each one is completely different from the next. Put three or four cenotes on your list of things to see for the day, and between the swimming and the bike ride you will end up with a great workout. Tulum is also a paradise for yoga. Maya Tulum, Amansala and Yoga Shala offer daily classes.

Just one word of advice: Bring lots of bug repellent and sunscreen. You’ll need it.
