MY ST. MORITZ

St. Moritz, Switzerland

After principal filming wrapped on the set of my latest movie, I decided to head to St. Moritz for a long weekend, one of my favorite places in the world. I’ve been spending time here since I was a child, and this trip, as always, did not disappoint – St. Moritz lived up to its branding, quite simply, “Top of The World”.

Friday Afternoon:

I arrive in St. Moritz on a clear and crisp wintry afternoon after a jaw-dropping train ride through the Swiss Alps (an UNESCO site for its uniqueness and beauty). If a private plane isn’t in the picture, the train is a great way to go as the scenery is stunning. Even the King of Dubai prefers taking the train over his own personal jet! Imagine being completely surrounded by snow and mountains, crossing the Alps over viaducts spanning steep gorges and through spiraling tunnels which wind their way up through the mountains to the permafrost of the glaciers; all of this makes the adventure quite unbelievable.

After dropping off my bags at a private apartment at Tordi's Haus, a charming chalet at the end of the Bob Track, I hit the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival. Now let me admit straight out that I am a complete and utter chocolate lover and there is no way I am going to miss the Chocolate Cult going on at Badrutt’s Palace (my favorite hotel in St. Moritz- always a classy affair). Walking into the elegant Hall, an amazing spread of chocolates greets me, making my arrival in town quite- should I say, sweet! I beeline straight for a fresh chocolate truffle made that very morning. It is so fresh that I can’t even explain the deliciousness to you – the best word I can find to describe it is levitating! Then I continue tasting other unusual pieces such as a spicy chili chocolate, chocolate cappuccino tart, and a fluffy chocolate mandarin mousse. Phenomenal! The Palace’s Pastry Chef, Stefan Gerber, stops by and shows me his latest creation- a chocolate painting replicating a Miro. A true work of art! He recounts how he recently created an enormous chocolate shoe for the daughter of an Arab sheik. How sweet is that? Before heading out I get a personal lesson on the creation of chocolate from Sepp Fässler, master chocolatier at Confiserie Sprüngli, one of Switzerland’s most prestigious confectionery houses.

After this sugar rush, I meet a few local friends and we all go for an original Swiss fondue at Engiadina, a traditional fondue restaurant in the heart of St. Moritz. I’m telling you, nothing is better on a wintry night than a real Swiss fondue. Cozy and sexy!

After dinner, we drop by the Kings Club at Badrutt’s Palace. This club is legendary! Small and exclusive, it has always been the stage for stars and starlets to gather and bask in their own glow (with the inevitable beam chasers getting in on the glory). This is where everyone goes and anything can happen. It’s the place in town to see and be seen. The music pumps everything from Beyonce to Frank Sinatra and champagne flows steadily all night. And when I say this, I mean “all night”… when the first rays of light begin to peek over the horizon, the club is still going, except now the chef is serving pasta. With a few drinks in the can, sitting at a table next to the sexy dance floor surrounded by old and new friends, in the wee hours of the night and in the middle of the Alps, eating an incredible plate of pasta …. Let me tell you, moments like this are close to a phenomenal night of you-know-what.

Saturday:

Wake up at 9am. No hangover, thank God the champagne was top shelf! After a quick shower, a just-out-of-the-oven croissant and a glass of Swiss milk, by 10am I’m on the bob track watching the Bobsled World Cup competition which, conveniently, is right in front of Tordi’s Haus. This event is so cool to watch- bobs come down the naturally built ice canal in the middle of the woods at a speed of 150 km/hour. They literally fly by! It’s hard to describe the speed in which the bob takes the turns- much more exciting and fast paced than you see on TV. The Canadians clinch the 2-man bob, and I’m off…

It’s lunch time!! And I’m hungry. Luckily, about 100 meters from the start of the bob run, there’s a cozy, sunny and peaceful ice skating rink, where I position myself on a lounge chair, order a Bratwurst and Rösti (both superb and filling traditional Swiss dishes) and watch the Curling World Cup which just happens to be going on (activities in St. Moritz never seem to end…).

After soaking up some sun at lunch, I head to the frozen Lake St. Moritz to catch the championship match of the Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow, the world’s most prestigious winter polo tournament played on the frozen surface of the lake. After Julius Baer claimed victory in their first ever final, beating Brioni 6-3½, I head back to the Palace once again to warm up at the hotel’s pool. Relaxing in the Jacuzzi and the steam baths, and partaking in a few spa treatments rejuvenates me completely, at least enough to head over to the Kulm Hotel’s cozy restaurant Rôtisserie des Chevaliers for dinner. A peaceful place, the Lapin with Spaetzli, Pizzoccheri (a local specialty) and Bündenerfleisch are outstanding!

After that, guess what… I have a wild night with a sexy woman who looks like an Italian Vogue model? Sorry to disappoint, but after a glass of smooth local grappa, I hit the hay straightaway (I’m a young, strong & sexy guy, but even a guy like me needs some rest after a day like this!!) The day was extraordinary, filled with sports, sun, nature, glamour, and top food & wine. Not a single bad choice in the day… so I’m happy to go to bed. Also, I have big skiing plans for the following day…

Sunday:

I wake up early and do the Cresta Run. This by the way is something else. Started by the British in 1885, this notorious ice run is the only one of its kind in the world and is built from scratch every year using the natural contours of the valley and earth banks to provide a framework on which to pile the snow. This has always been something I’ve wanted to do. And today is the day – my first Cresta run! I gear up (they outfit you in shoulder pads and a helmet and give you a crash course on how to properly position your weight on the sled and how to balance when you approach a turn – unfortunately they don’t tell you how to brake as it’s impossible to break on a skeleton!!) and then after a few moments of excitement, I focus and here we go. I push off and speed head first down the icy shoot at 90 miles/hr (I’m not kidding here!) Luckily I manage to stay on the track and keep my limbs intact – I finish the ¾ of a mile run in around a minute. Talk about exhilarating! The Cresta is a wild ride, and something I plan on doing again.

Twenty minutes later, I’m on the ski slopes in Corviglia. If you would see the view from Corviglia, there is only one word for it: magic winter fairytale land! I ski non-stop for three hours in superb conditions (sun & snow), then have a three-course meal with an equally impressive view from the restaurant Matthys, where at close to 3,000 meters you can dine on caviar, Graved Lachs, pâte, champagne and other treats. I have the Graved Lachs and the pâte (honestly, it’s the best pâte I’ve ever had) topped off with a glass of champagne and pine ice cream. No need to say more.

Then, the big question… to ski down to the village (the snow is perfect and the sunset just like a movie) or take the equally exciting train ride down with fantastic views of the village… mhhhh???? I can’t decide, so I make like James Bond and fly down!

Yes, incredible and true. From the top of the mountain, you can take the Delta (a triangular paraglider) and sail down to the village, landing on the frozen lake (where the polo match was yesterday). The Delta ride is simply indescribable. The feeling of flying off the top of a mountain, the breathtaking views on the descent - this is an once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Landing on the lake intact, I jump into a nice and warm Mercedes taxi which drives me straight to Tordi’s Haus.

St. Moritz, no better place!

I look forward to coming back next weekend for the White Turf Horse Races!
